About Circumcision

Quick answer

Circumcision removes the foreskin. It is done for medical reasons such as a tight foreskin, recurrent infection, or scarring, and also electively. It is a day-care procedure, under general anaesthesia in children and usually local anaesthesia in adults.

Medical reasons and elective choice

The most common medical reason is phimosis, where the foreskin is too tight to retract, causing difficulty passing urine, pain, or recurrent infection. Scarring from repeated infection and paraphimosis, where a retracted foreskin cannot be returned, also need treatment.

Many circumcisions are elective, for religious, cultural, or personal reasons, and those are handled with the same clinical standards. In young children with a mildly tight foreskin and no symptoms, watchful waiting is often appropriate, since many resolve naturally with growth.

How it is done

In children, the procedure is done under general anaesthesia so the child is still and comfortable. In adults, local anaesthesia is usually sufficient, with sedation available if preferred.

The foreskin is removed, and the edges are closed with absorbable stitches that dissolve on their own, so there is no suture removal appointment. The whole procedure typically takes twenty to forty minutes, and you go home the same day.

Recovery in practice

Swelling and bruising are expected for the first week and can look more alarming than they are. Discomfort is greatest in the first two to three days and settles well with simple painkillers.

Adults usually return to desk work within three to five days. Children are generally back to normal activity within a week, though rough play and cycling wait about tw weekso. Sexual activity in adults waits four to six weeks, and that interval is worth respecting since early activity risks wound separation.

Frequently asked questions

How much does circumcision cost in Surat?

It depends mainly on the type of anaesthesia needed, which depends on age, and on whether scarring makes the procedure more complex. A written estimate covering surgeon, anaesthesia and day-care charges is given at consultation.

Is it painful?

Nothing is felt during the procedure because of anaesthesia. Afterwards there is soreness for two to three days, well managed with simple painkillers taken regularly rather than only when pain appears.

How long is the hospital stay?

It is a day-care procedure, so you go home the same day, usually within a few hours of surgery.

When can I return to work or school?

Adults generally return to desk work in three to five days. Children are usually back at school within a week, avoiding sport and rough play for about two weeks.

Do the stitches need removing?

No. Absorbable stitches are used, which dissolve on their own over two to three weeks. No removal appointment is needed, although a review visit is still arranged.

Does my young son need it if the foreskin is tight?

Not always. A mildly tight foreskin without symptoms often loosens naturally as a child grows. Surgery is indicated where there is difficulty passing urine, recurrent infection, ballooning or scarring. Examination decides this rather than a rule.

What are the risks?

Bleeding, infection, swelling, and uncommonly removing too much or too little skin, or a narrowing at the opening. Most settle without further treatment. Any heavy bleeding or spreading redness should be reported the same day.

Is it covered by insurance?

Circumcision for a documented medical indication such as phimosis or recurrent infection is often covered. Elective circumcision for religious or personal reasons is generally not. Cover is confirmed before admission.
