Permanent makeup, also called micropigmentation, places pigment into the upper layer of skin to define brows, the lash line or lips. It is semi-permanent rather than permanent, fading over one to three years, and it needs a top-up session after the first healing.
The best results look like tidy, slightly fuller versions of what you already have. Brow work fills gaps and defines a shape. Lash line enhancement adds definition without looking like eyeliner. Lip work restores colour and outline that has faded with age.
It cannot replace an absent brow with something that looks entirely natural at close range, and it cannot be undone easily. Removal, where wanted later, needs laser sessions and is slower and more uncomfortable than the original procedure. That asymmetry between doing and undoing is worth understanding before you start.
This is a procedure that breaks the skin. That means sterility, single use needles, patch testing for pigment allergy, and knowing when not to proceed. Active skin infection, certain autoimmune conditions, keloid tendency and some medicines are all reasons to postpone.
It is also worth being honest about positioning. Permanent makeup sits at the lighter end of what a surgical practice does. It is offered because patients ask, done properly and conservatively, and it is never presented as a substitute for treating an underlying problem.
Colour looks considerably darker and sharper for the first week, then softens by thirty to fifty per cent as the skin heals. Judging the result before four weeks causes unnecessary alarm.
A top-up session at six to eight weeks is part of the treatment, not a sign something went wrong, because pigment retention varies between people. After that, expect gradual fading over one to three years, and some colour shift as the pigment breaks down.
