Botox relaxes the muscles that create expression lines, softening them. Fillers replace lost volume and support tissue that has descended. They treat different problems and are often combined. Botox lasts three to four months and most fillers nine to eighteen.
The confusion is common and worth clearing up. Botox works on lines created by movement, so the forehead, the frown lines between the brows and the creases beside the eyes. It stops the muscle pulling the skin into a crease.
Fillers work on volume and structure. Hollowing under the eyes, flattening of the cheeks, deepening of the folds from nose to mouth. Injecting filler into a movement line does not fix it, and relaxing a muscle does not restore lost volume. Using the wrong one is why some results look odd.
The face that reads as overdone is almost always the result of too much, too often, rather than of the products themselves. A frozen upper face, over-projected cheeks and heavy lips are the signatures of chasing more rather than aiming for natural.
A conservative approach starts with less than you think you need and reviews at two weeks. Adding is straightforward. Reversing filler is possible with an enzyme for certain types, but it is a nuisance, and reversing botox is not possible at all. You simply wait for it to wear off.
These are medical procedures, not beauty treatments. The serious complications, though uncommon, are real. Filler injected into or compressing a blood vessel can cause skin loss and, very rarely, visual problems. Knowing the facial anatomy and knowing what to do immediately if it happens is what separates a safe injector from a risky one.
Ask who is injecting, what product is being used, and whether the reversal enzyme is on the premises. Any clinic that finds those questions awkward is answering them for you.
